GETTING MEASURED
FOR A SAMPLE MAIDS' DRESS: |
|
BACKGROUND:
NO HUMAN BODY WILL FIT INTO A DESIGNER'S SIZE CHART PERFECTLY!
Bridal sizing is usually 2 sizes up from your usual ready-to-wear
street clothing! Everyone will need alterations of some sort.
These gowns are not custom-made for you. Therefore, more unusual
body types will need more alterations than the average person.
We cannot control what alterations cost in your area. Alterations
are an art - the seamstress may have to do more than the average
'nip and tuck' if you have a large chest and very small waist,
or have a wide waist and small but, are pregnant, or have recently
had a baby.
THE NUMBERS TELL US EVERYTHING:
The measurements you have taken should be compared to the designer's
specific size chart above.
Dresses should be ordered according to your largest measurement.
Your bust may measure at a size 4, but your waist may be an 8.
Therefore, a size 8 will ensure that the dress fits your waist.
Your bust will have to be taken in more than usual. If you are
in-between sizes, you must go up to the next size. You can let
out seams in bridal gowns, but we can only estimate that you
can gain an inch at the most. If you measure out at more than
an inch larger than any measurement, we cannot guarantee that
the dress will fit. Also, you would not want to let out any dress
with intricate beading, or an organza overlay, as it may be quite
noticeable. It is always easier to take in a seam than let out
one!
For brides who
may have a little extra around the waist: There is hope! By wearing
a "smoothie" - a power-net type panty that has a high
waist - often can take off as much as an inch to your waist.
We often have our brides wear these under their bridal gowns
for a smoother look, and to help them get into a snug-fitting
dress.
For brides who may be on a weight-loss plan: If you are on Jenny
Craig, or the Atkins Diet, or working out with a trainer, you
may be able to get into the sample dress of your dreams. Estimate
your weight loss. Ten pounds lost, and you can lose an inch in
your waist! If you have time until the wedding, and are determined
to lose it for your wedding, you probably will! Factor this weight
loss into your size goal. If the sample dress is a little small
now, you may get into it by the time of the wedding.

HOW TO GET MEASURED
FOR A SAMPLE DRESS: |
|
PLEASE GET MEASURED OVER YOUR UNDERGARMENTS
ONLY! DO NOT GET MEASURED OVER YOUR SHIRT OR SWEATER AND PANTS!
PLEASE WEAR A BRA!! Please do
not wear a sports bra or one of those mesh, tube-type bras that
everyone is wearing these days. They do not give you support,
and will flatten you out. Wear a good underwire bra, preferrably
with a molded cup - Body by Victoria at Victoria's Secret , and
most good bra manufacturers such as Lillyette and Bali all make
them.
If you are measuring yourself with the help of a friend - PLEASE
USE A MEASURING TAPE! These are inexpensive and available at
most chain store such as Wal-Mart or Target. Please, no dental
floss or 6" rulers!
STEP 1: MEASURE YOUR BUST:
With arms out at your sides, bring the tape measure around your
back and across the fullest part of your bust.
Make sure the measuring tape is not sliding up your back. Put
your arms down at your sides. Take that measurement.
Different bras may give you a different measurement, depending
on the amount of support and bra padding.
STEP 2: MEASURE YOUR WAIST:
Bring the tape measure around your natural waist, where your
waist naturally indents, just above your belly button.
Take that measurement.
Do not measure your waist at the point where most girls wear
their low-rider, hip-hugger pants and skirts. This is far below
your natural waist!
STEP 3: MEASURE YOUR HIPS:
Measure your hips at their widest point, which is at the top
of your thighs, about 7'8" below your waist that you have
just measured. Take that measurement.
STEP 4: TAKE EACH MEASUREMENT AGAIN:
Did you get the same measurement exactly the second time? Great!
That is the number you use. If you got a different number, do
it again until you get the same measurement.
STEP 5: SEE IF YOU FIT INTO THE SIZE CHART ABOVE.
Your measurements must be at or below the size chart above. Your
largest measurement would have to fit into that particular size.
If you are looking ar a size 10 dress, and your bust measures
at a size 14, you will not fit into the sample dress!
If you fell in love with a size 12 sample, and you measure at
a size 10, you can probably have the dress taken in. It is OK
to go down a size, possibly two, but any more than that would
require the talents of a very precise seamstress!
IF YOU ARE 5'9" OR OVER, THIS DRESS MAY BE TOO SHORT
FOR YOU. WEARING LOW HEELS OR FLAT SHOES MAY BE NEEDED. |
